The first SLACYS meet up for the MLIS Winter 2016 semester will be a nacho mixer on Tuesday, January 12th at 12:30pm in the Grad Club. Looking forward to meeting the new SLACYS recruits!

We’re halfway through the fall term!

It’s been a busy but exciting term for SLACYS. We had a successful Thanksgiving cider fundraiser which made the hallway outside the GRC smell amazing!

We also had the opportunity to listen to some very informative presentations by three of our executive members about the use of music in preschool story times, early numeracy, and banned books for young adults.

Our term is still not over! Join us for our community story time at London Public Library’s Central branch on Sunday November 15 at 2 pm. Bring the children in your life to enjoy presentations of the Three Little Pigs and Little Red Riding Hood.

We are also taking some time to enjoy ourselves with a wine tasting at the London Wine Bar on Saturday November 14, time TBA. Tickets are $25, and space is limited to 25 people. Info about how to purchase tickets will be posted soon.

Meeting Recap & Upcoming Events

SLACYS has gotten off to a great start, and we have lots of things planned for this term. Today’s meeting saw the executive members present their reader resources created for Hana’s Suitcase last term in LIS9362 Materials for Older Children (8-12 years). Exec members shared why they created the resources they did, and how the resources could be used in library programs.

SLACYS is planning a number of exciting events and meetings for the term. A tentative schedule follows, but dates and activities are subject to change.

  • October 7 & 8 – Cider Sale Fundraiser
  • October 11 – Regular Meeting, including presentations on early numeracy, music in storytimes, banned books
  • October 27 or 29 – Toronto trip in conjunction with SLA
  • November 4 & 11 – Planning & rehearsal for outreach with London Public Library
  • November 14 – Outreach at London Public Library
  • November (date TBA) – Wine Bar trip
  • November 25 – Guest speaker (TBA)
  • December 9 – Christmas Party

Meeting this week

Hello all! SLACYS will be meeting tomorrow (Wednesday, August 5th) at 12:30pm on the Grad Club patio. This week’s meeting will include a talk led by Maria and elections for all executive positions.

Additionally, anyone who is interested in participating in the Kettle and Stoney Point TD Summer Reading Club this Thursday from 10am-12pm, please contact Beth at ecrawle@uwo.ca for the details.

Hey everyone!

SLACYS will be meeting tomorrow (Wed., July 8th) at noon. As discussed at our last meeting, we are going to meet outside on the Grad Club patio but if weather does not permit we will head to our usual spot at the tables by Tim Hortons. This week, we will be devoting the meeting to planning our story time community event! This event will take place at Cherry Hill Public Library on Saturday July, 25th from 1-2pm. We will also be discussing next week’s fundraiser.

SLACYS Updates

Hi everybody,

Tomorrow afternoon (Tuesday, June 23rd), SLACYS will be heading to Silver City at Masonville to see the movie Inside Out. The movie starts at 4:20pm and we will be meeting outside the theatre at 3:50pm. Beth and Amy have both offered to drive if anyone needs a ride there. Beth has 6 seats available in her vehicle and Amy has 4. Please send Beth (ecrawle@uwo.ca) and/or Amy (aheans@uwo.ca) an email if you need a ride. Pick up and drop off will be at NCB.
We will be having our next meeting on Wednesday, June 24th at noon. We’ll be meeting at the tables by the Tim Hortons at NCB. Katelyn will be talking to us about the Forest of Reading Program.

No meeting this week!

Just a reminder to all that for the Summer semester, SLACYS will be holding bi-weekly meetings.

This means that since we met last week – and heard a great talk from Beth about Teen Readers’ Advisory Boards! – there will be no meeting tomorrow.

We will reconvene next Wednesday so stay tuned for more updates!

Meeting and Exec Election – Wednesday April 8 @ noon

Hello All!

This is a reminder that SLACYS will be meeting in the Grad Lounge (NCB) on Wednesday, April 8.

The schedule for the meeting will be as follows:

1. Executive election! SLACYS policy is to open up all positions each semester, and as a result the positions of President, Vice-President, Communications Officer, Secretary, and Treasurer are open for the summer. If you’re interested in learning more about any of these positions keep reading.

2. Discussion of teen programming in libraries – examples, best practices and planning resources

3. We’ll finish off with a fun craft!

Here is a rundown of the SLACYS executive positions. Depending on interest we can combine positions. If you have any questions feel free to email Kim Visser, our current president.

President: Is the public face of the group.  This includes coordinating the group introduction during orientation to incoming cohorts.  They shall also act as the contact with the faculty advisory.  They chair/facilitate group meetings and group organization. Decision making for SLACYS shall also be facilitated by the president. The president shall use his or her discretion concerning the need for a group vote on a subject, and if deemed necessary shall put forward a motion to the group, particularly concerning the expenditure of group funds.  They should maintain a list of group member with current contact information and email group members reminders of upcoming meetings and events for each semester.

Vice-President: Will assist the president as required.  They organizes incoming speakers and any visits or tours undertaken by the group.  If possible, it is assumed that the Vice-President will replace the President in the following semester.

Communications Officer: Provides members and interested parties with information about meetings, special events, and general group practices. In charge of maintaining the Twitter, Facebook page, and WordPress blog. Creates and posts advertisements for the fundraiser and other special events.  They are also in charge of keeping the chalk-board up to date with SLACYS weekly information.  They shall email SLACYS weekly group updates to the appropriate student or receive and email all MLIS student group information on a weekly basis.

Secretary: Responsible for taking minutes of group meeting which they will then post on google docs where it is available to executive and by request of members. They should maintain an up-to-date schedule of meetings and events and maintain and/or create other documents concerning group business as the group deems necessary.

Treasurer: Keeps track of the money and let the exec know when asked. Organizes one to two fundraisers a semester for SLACYS. They are responsible for reimbursing members for approved group expenses. They are responsible for allocating funds for guest speakers.

Thanks to those who donated their time, baked goods and money for our March 18 Bake Sale! As you can see, we sold some delicious treats and the sale was a great success!

We’d also like to remind you that SLACYS will be meeting in the Grad Lounge (NCB) on Wednesday, March 25 at noon to talk about sock puppets and puppet shows in libraries.
