SLACYS talks comics!

In lieu of TCAF feels from last week, SLACYS held a meeting about comics and graphic novels for kids and teens on the 16th.

We discussed a range of ideas, including budgets for comics and advocating for comics and graphic novels in the library. Some libraries include the adult comics near the teen comics in order to improve circulation – teens are often comfortable with exploring other graphic novels!

Many of us have memories of reading comics as children, whether or not we read Archie comics, TinTin, Calvin and Hobbes, or manga! Here are just a few suggestions and resources that we discussed.

Suggested Reading:

Bone – Jeff Smith

Smile – Raina Telgemeier

Owly – Andy Runton

Anya’s Ghost – Vera Brosgol

American Born Chinese – Gene Luen Yang

Zita the Spacegirl – Ben Hatke

Calvin and Hobbes – Bill Watterson

Archie comics

Superhero comics

Graphic novel adaptation of YA novels (Twilight, Beautiful Creatures, etc.)

Resources:

School Library Journal – Graphic Novels

No Flying No Tights – Kids

Goodreads List – Best Graphic Novels for Kids
